Believed to house the guardian spirit deity Chao Pho Lak Mueang, protecting the city and its people, the city pillar erected by King Rama I on 21 April 1782, the same day he declared Bangkok the new capital of Siam, Bangkok City Pillar Shrine is a historic and spiritual landmark in the heart of Thailand. It is situated opposite the Grand Palace and near Wat Phra Kaew, making it easy to include in a cultural walking tour.
