Famous for its turquoise waters, white sand, and the dramatic backdrop of Le Morne Brabant mountain, a UNESCO World Heritage site, Le Morne Beach in Mauritius is a breathtaking stretch of coastline, a paradise for both relaxation and adventure, especially kitesurfing. Le Morne Beach is closely tied to the tragic history of Le Morne Brabant mountain, where runaway slaves also known as Maroons, escaped plantations in Mauritius to hide in the mountains as its isolation and rugged terrain made it a natural hideout. In 1835, British soldiers climbed the mountain to inform the Maroons of their freedom but tragically the slaves misunderstood, believing that they were about to be captured again and many jumped from the cliffs to their deaths. This soul-crushing event turned Le Morne into a symbol of suffering, sacrifice and the fight for freedom.
