Ile aux Aigrettes is a tiny island off the southeast coast of Mauritius. Its area is only 27 hectares. It's actually on top of a coral reef. There are no beaches here. The island of Ile aux Aigrettes preserves the world's only area of "Mauritian dry coastal forest" - a once abundant species of vegetation. Therefore, it is home to a large number of extremely rare or endangered species of plants and animals. In 1965, the island was declared a nature reserve by the government. Now, it is under the care of the Mauritian Wildlife Foundation and supported by organizations around the world. Intensive work is underway to restore the vegetation and the few remaining native species and animals. In addition, several other species that survived elsewhere in Mauritius have been reintroduced. As the island is a protected area, it can only be seen on a tour organized by the Mauritius Wildlife Trust. These excursions are a stunning way to see the breathtaking landscapes of south-eastem Mauritius, admire rare species of piants and animals, gain insight into the early of Mauritius, and leam about the important conservation work that takesplace here. All proceeds from the events go to support the recovery of the island.
