L Aventure du Sucre is a state-of-the-art, well-equipped museum set within the walls of an ancient sugar mill, presenting the history of Mauritius, inextricably linked with sugar production. Initially, the plant was founded in 1797 and operated until 1999. Much of the equipment remains to this day, and former workers are on hand to answer questions about the factory and the complex process of turning sugar cane into crystals. The excursion is as informative as possible and is very popular with children, as it has many interactive features. Moving from room to room, you flip through the pages of the history of Mauritius from the first Dutch settlements to the present day. At the end of your historical journey, you will be able to taste some of the 15 varieties of unrefined sugar, two of which were invented in Mauritius, and in the museum boutique you can purchase all existing varieties of sugar, marmalade, tropical fruit jam and rum made from molasses.
