Black River Gorges National Park is a unique place that attracts attention in photographs and banners of the island. The park is located in the southwest of Mauritius and occupies about 7 thousand hectares. Almost half of its area has been included in the global network of biosphere reserves since 1977. Created in 1994, the park is designed to preserve the unique nature of Mauritius. Here you can see endemic species of animals, plants and birds that are not found anywhere else in the world. The park includes forests, swamps, mountain rivers and waterfalls. The most popular of them are the Rivière Noire region with the Alexandra waterfalls, Piton de la Petit, which is the highest point of Mauritius, the Grand Bassin lake, formed in the crater of an extinct volcano, and the Plane Champagne Plain, the rainiest place on the island. Also, there are many more interesting places in the park. There are scientific stations conducting various studies here. The reserve has 4 entrances and equipped with a total length of 60 km. It also organizes educational tours for visitors.
