Mahébourg was the first French settlement and remained an important port until the early 20th century, when the British moved all port operations to Port Louis. A lighthouse was built in 1864 to guide ships to the port. Basalt stones and corals were used as building materials. Its protrusion into the sea is 26 km. Each evening the lighthouse was lit manually by the keeper. Unfortunately, over time, the lighthouse is destroyed, but right behind it, in the round part of the cliff, a colony of amazing tropical birds nests.
