The National History Museum takes you on a historical journey through the island, dating back to the 18th century. It is housed in a stately colonial mansion, with 12 acres of gardens that feature a colorful reconstruction of a colonial village. The museum's collection showcases the rich history of Mauritius, including fascinating old maps, ship models from important episodes in Mauritian history, weapons and artifacts salvaged from shipwrecks and naval battles, collections of old coins and furniture. Also in the museum's collection is a rare, intact skeleton of a dodo. One of the wonders is an engraving that depicts Dutch gentlemen riding on the back of a giant turtle. And the cannon located in front of the museum entrance was discovered on the sunken British frigate La Magicienne.
