Evenor de Chaval built his house in Curepipe around 1880 because, due to an epidemic in Mauritius, he had to spend the summer months in the highlands. He named the house La Sablonniere in memory of the family home in France. He moved a miniature Eiffel Tower there. In 1989, on July 14, this tower decorated the Place du Theater in Port Louis during the holiday.
